Our generation has turned relationships into ego battles. Who has more control over who. Who can hold out longer after an argument. Who gets their way more.

None of this is love. It’s ego.

In love, ego does not exist. You have to put your pride to the side. You have to put your fears to the side. You have to be open and vulnerable and love without expecting anything in return.

So many relationships end because one or both partners are not honest.

That’s why it’s imperative you get to know and love yourself first. If you can’t even be honest with yourself, how are you going to be honest with someone else?

Let’s get back to really loving one another.

Let’s get back to honesty, vulnerability, expression of feelings, and showing up for one another. That’s love.

It’s hard for me to present love at face value. It seems it’s much easier to explain figuratively. So here’s my poem about love.

Update: I wrote this some months ago and thought I needed to add something because of the recent events with Will Smith and Jada Smith. Just because you love someone does not mean to have to be in relationship with them. Relationship and love are not automatically correlated in my opinion.

Words Unsaid

I love you

Come be with me

I like having you around

I’m hurt. You’re wrong!!!

I’m scared. I’m leaving!!!

I don’t want to lose you. I don’t need you!!!

I don’t even remember what the argument Bye!!! Good riddins!! I was good before you,

was about, but I have to win. I’ll be good without you.

I miss you.

I love you.
